What Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover?
Whether it’s a scooter for getting around town, or a touring cycle for those cross-country treks you’ll never forget, our motorcycle insurance coverage options are designed for the way you ride. Motorcycle insurance policy coverage includes:
Comprehensive and collision motorcycle insurance protection
Put yourself at ease. We’ll help you repair or replace your motorcycle with collision coverage for crashes, and comprehensive coverage for theft, fire, storms and more. Have you tricked your motorcycle with extra chrome, saddlebags or a trailer? Our policy automatically gives you $3,000 of customization coverage, with higher limits available.
Motorcycle gear protection coverage
Safety should come first when you hit the road — that’s why we offer protection for your riding gear. Get up to $1,000 of safety apparel coverage for your helmet, boots and other gear and ride on with style.
Collision deductible waiver
So, you’ve accidentally backed your bike into your car. Now what? With our collision deductible waiver, if both your motorcycle and car are insured by us, we’ll waive the less expensive deductible if the deductible amounts for each vehicle varies.
Earned accident forgiveness
Your good driving habits really pay off! If you and the drivers on your policy have been accident-free with us or another insurance company for five consecutive years, switch to us and your first accident won’t cause a rate increase* — no matter how much your claim comes to.
Motorcycle liability coverage
We all make mistakes. If you accidentally hurt someone or damage their property, our motorcycle liability insurance coverage will help keep you financially protected, so you can keep your future plans on track.
Insurance for Many Types of Motorcycles
Motorcycles come in all shapes and sizes. That’s why we offer protection for a variety of different models including:
- Cruisers
- Sport motorcycles
- Mopeds
- Motorized scooters
- Touring motorcycles
However, there are some exclusions when it comes to custom or high-value motorcycles and motorcycles designed specifically for racing. If you think your ride might fall under one of those categories, connect with your agent today and learn more about how we can protect your two-wheels.
What Motorcycle Insurance Doesn't Cover
Though your motorcycle policy protects you in many ways, there are some situations when it may not.
For instance, if a driver without insurance hits you and causes damage to your cycle or causes bodily injury, you could be left covering the repair and/or medical costs. Or if you get stranded on the side of the road because of a dead battery, your motorcycle policy may not cover assistance. These examples require additional coverages that are offered separately so you can personalize your motorcycle policy — according to your needs.
It’s important to fully understand what’s included in your standard policy so you know what coverages to consider adding to your policy for a broader range of coverage and more peace of mind.
Added Motorcycle Insurance, Extra Peace of Mind
Take a look at these additional endorsement coverage options available for extra protection on the road. The coverage options listed below are for purchase individually — and they offer real peace of mind when you’re out on the open road. Reach out to your agent to learn the policy limits for each of the coverages listed below.
Medical expense motorcycle coverage
If you’re hurt while on your motorcycle, this coverage will help pay for medical care to get you back to your old self.
Uninsured motorist coverage
Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if you or anyone riding on your motorcycle is hurt in an accident that was caused by an uninsured vehicle or a hit-and-run driver.
Underinsured motorist coverage
This helps pay for the balance when another driver is at fault and doesn’t carry enough insurance.
New vehicle replacement
This provides replacement coverage for a new vehicle (exact year, make and model) that’s been totaled.
Loan or lease assistance
If you owe more on the lease or loan than the value of your vehicle, this coverage helps pay the difference in the event of a total loss.
Accidental death and dismemberment**
This coverage helps pay in the event of death or certain injuries to you or covered persons in your household when riding in or struck by a vehicle — regardless of who is at fault.
Road trip accident accommodations
If you have an accident 100 miles or more away from home, this covers emergency expenses like lodging, meals and alternate transportation.
Emergency road service
Did your bike break down? Got a flat tire? Have a dead battery? With 24/7 emergency roadside assistance, all it takes is a call to 1-800-MYAMFAM (1-800-692-6326) anywhere, anytime to get the help you need to get back on the road. This assistance will help if you run out of fuel or are experiencing mechanical issues, flat tires, a dead battery and more.
Save for the Unexpected With Our Diminishing Deductible Coverage
When you have a motorcycle insurance claim, you might have to pay a deductible before your insurance company kicks in to cover the repairs or replacement costs.
At American Family Insurance, we know that a deductible isn’t always the easiest thing to pay after an accident. But with our Diminishing Deductible, we hope to ease that burden by offering a way to reduce your motorcycle collision and comprehensive deductible amount. Here’s how it works:
Earn Credit Immediately
We’ll credit your deductible $100 on day one. Let’s say you have a $500 deductible. Good news — it just dropped to $400.
Watch Your Deductible Diminish
Your deductible will continue to reduce each year at policy renewal, up to $500, as long as you maintain your policy with us and no comprehensive or collision claims are paid.
Savings When You Need It
If you have a claim, you’ll pay a reduced deductible amount thanks to your Diminishing Deductible coverage. Your deductible then resets, so you’ll go right back to earning a reduced deductible amount.
