American Family Insurance is proud to have been one of the first companies to offer premium relief — and one of the one of the last to continue it into the spring of 2021. Since April 2020, we’ve returned more than $530M to our customers in 19 states through personal checks and auto premium relief credits.

Auto Premium Relief Credit: July 2020 - May 2021

Through our Auto Premium Relief Credit, we returned a portion of our customers’ auto premiums for qualifying personal auto policies (10% for policies in force July 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021 and 5% for policies in force April 1, 2021 through May 31, 2021).

Although the credit has ended, the savings have not! Now is a great time to review your policy with your agent to make sure you’re taking advantage of all the ways to save on your insurance –– such as KnowYourDrive®, AutoPay, Paperless Billing and more.

Auto Premium Relief Payment

The Auto Premium Relief Payment was a one-time $50.00 payment for each personal automobile insured with American Family. This relief payment was issued in April 2020 to customers with eligible auto policies that were in force as of March 11, 2020.

Auto Premium Relief Credit FAQs

  1. Anyone who had a qualifying American Family personal auto policy between July 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 was eligible for a premium credit for whatever months they had coverage:
    • 10% credit for qualifying personal auto policies in force July 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021*
    • 5% credit for qualifying personal auto policies in force April 1, 2021 through May 31, 2021*

    The Auto Premium Relief Credit only applied to personal auto policies issued by American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., American Family Insurance Company, American Standard Insurance Company of Wisconsin and American Standard Insurance Company of Ohio.

  2. Private passenger vehicles insured with American Family were eligible for the Auto Premium Relief Credit.* This included cars, vans, pick-ups, SUVs, personal trailers, antique/classic cars and farm trucks. The Auto Premium Relief Credit only applied to personal auto policies issued by American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., American Family Insurance Company, American Standard Insurance Company of Wisconsin and American Standard Insurance Company of Ohio.

    Please note that campers, motorhomes, motorcycles and other cycles, tractors, farm machinery and low-speed golf carts were not eligible. In addition, premiums for commercial auto policies were not eligible.

  3. You can see the Auto Premium Relief Credit on eligible premium payments by referencing your billing statement, signing into My Account or logging into the MyAmFam app.

  4. No, the Auto Premium Relief Credit will not affect your future rates.
  5. Customers only received the Auto Premium Relief Credit for the period their qualifying personal auto policy was in force between July 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021.* Changing or cancelling your policy between July 2020 and May 2021 may have affected your Auto Premium Relief Credit.

    Before you change or cancel your policy, we recommend you call us at 1-800-MYAMFAM (1-800-692-6326) or contact your local agent to discuss your planned changes or cancellation.

  6. The Auto Premium Relief Credit is a credit applied to the premium for active personal auto policies: a 10% credit for qualifying policies between July 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021 and a 5% credit for qualifying policies between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2021. In effect, the premium relief credit lowers the amount customers pay on their premium for coverage for July 2020 through May 2021.*

    The auto premium relief payment was a one-time payment of $50 per personal automobile insured with American Family as of March 11, 2020. The auto premium relief payment did not affect the amount customers paid for their personal auto policy premium.

  7. From the initial round of Auto Premium Relief Payments in April 2020* to the end of the Auto Premium Relief Credit on May 31, 2021,* American Family has provided our customers with more than a year of premium relief to help support them through the most difficult periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. These savings were created in recognition of the decreased driving and accident rates occurring during the pandemic.

    As conditions improve and COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available, we expect to see driving and accident rates return to pre-pandemic levels.

    Although Auto Premium Relief has ended, American Family continues to offer many savings opportunities for our customers, including discounts for enrolling in KnowYourDrive®, AutoPay, Full Pay, paperless billing, bundling multiple policies and more.

Auto Insurance Premium Relief Payment FAQs

  1. It was a one-time return of premium directly to American Family Insurance personal auto customers because they were driving less and filing fewer claims during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. The Premium Relief Payment was a one-time payment of $50.00 per vehicle to eligible customers.
  3. Customers who had a private passenger automobile policy in force as of March 11, 2020, the date the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, received a payment. Classic and Advance policies were both eligible.
  4. Any Family Car schedule vehicles, including Medium/Heavy trucks, were eligible. Both owned and leased vehicles in this schedule qualify.

    Vehicles that were not eligible were: Cycles, Campers, Personal Trailers, Motor Homes, or Specialty Vehicles (golf carts, mini-trucks, personal mobility device, snowmobile, tractors/farm machinery). Non-owners’ policies, such as SR22s, were not eligible.

  5. No. Because the payment was based on a decrease in claims due to the majority of customers currently driving less, the funds are not connected to rates and will not result in a rate increase.
  6. No, it would not be considered a taxable event for the customer, as long as the amount the customer receives does not exceed the amount the customer has paid in premium during the calendar year (not the 6-month policy term).

*The 10% Auto Premium Relief Credit was based on qualifying American Family Insurance personal auto policies in force July 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021; the 5% Auto Premium Relief Credit was based on qualifying American Family Insurance personal auto policies in force between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2021. Vehicles eligible for the Auto Premium Relief Credit included cars, vans, pick-ups, SUVs, personal trailers, antique/classic cars and farm trucks. Some exclusions apply.

The premium relief payment was only available to eligible customers with qualifying auto policies as of March 11, 2020.
